The Latest on EV grants 2022

There are several government initiatives and grants to support the purchase of an electric vehicle and the installation of charge points.

Vehicle purchase costs

You can get a discount on the price of brand new low-emission vehicles through a grant the government gives to vehicle dealerships and manufacturers. You do not need to do anything if you want to buy one of these vehicles – the dealer will include the value of the grant in the vehicle’s price.

Full details of the scheme can be found here.

The UK government grant scheme, which has been in place for the last few years, ended in April 2022.  However, if you live in a flat or are in rented accommodation, you may still be able to get assistance.

EV Chargers for your company.

The scheme is run by the Office for Zero-Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and administered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

The grant covers up to 75% of the total costs of the purchase and installation of EV charge points (inclusive of VAT), capped at a maximum of:

    • £350 per socket
    • 40 sockets across all sites per applicant – for instance, if you would like to install them in forty sites, you will have one socket available per site
If you install fewer than 40 points initially, you can obtain the grant again until you reach the maximum 40 charge points.

The grant is available for the applicant, the company staff and fleet vehicle parking spaces but not for chargers used for dedicated customer parking spaces.

The parking facilities must be associated with the applicant’s premises and be either on-site or a reasonable distance from the place of work.

You need to either own the property or have permission from the landlord to install the charge points.

BiK Tax Advantages to workplace charger installation.

There are many advantages for businesses to install electric vehicle charge points apart from the contribution having them make to Green Credentials.

Attracting and retaining the right employees is a very topical issue. An employment package which supports an electric company vehicle is a significant addition to an employment package. Traditionally employees get heavy taxes on company cars, but with an electric vehicle, the Car Tax (BiK tax) is currently set a only 2%, which gives the employee a saving of several hundred pounds a month and the employer the advantage of low cost per mile for the electric charge in comparison to petrol or diesel.

Staff who do not have company cars also have the advantage of workplace charging for their own vehicles.

With the sale of new electric vehicles coming to an end in 2030, now is an excellent time to take advantage of the grant scheme to install electric vehicle charging at your premises.
